Lake Garda:
A dreamlike classic among Europe's training spots
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Proven by 2.467+ Safe Pilots
Nestled between alpine heights and mediterranean ease, between steep mountain slopes and olive and lemon groves, lies Italy's largest lake.
Its deep blue waters, imposing rock faces and charming little villages with their narrow streets, cafés and gelaterias make Lake Garda a paradise for outdoor sports enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike.
Thanks to its reliable wind system, professional infrastructure and high altitude reserves of over 1,000 metres in the manoeuvre box, it is one of the most attractive training areas in Europe for paragliders.
Location
From the valley town of Malcesine, the cable car takes us in just under 20 minutes to the 1,700 m high launch site on Monte Baldo – the starting point for our training flights. The extensive grassy plateau offers plenty of space and launch options to both the west and east. Once the manoeuvre position has been reached, there are usually over 1,000 metres of altitude available for intensive training, repeating sequences and consolidating movement patterns. We land on the specially constructed landing site directly on the lake shore of Malcesine, where the adjacent snack bar offers a quick bite to eat or where we can relax and end the training day with a cool drink.
As the Vento, a strong north wind, usually blows across the lake in the morning, providing ideal conditions for surfers and kiters, our flight window often only opens up during the course of the morning. We therefore use the early hours relaxed to analyse videos and delve deeper into theory.
Why Lake Garda?
With plenty of height above the water and suitable infrastructure, Lake Garda offers ideal and safe conditions for training advanced manoeuvres, especially freestyle and acro figures. This means that impressive learning progress can be achieved in a short time. And once the wing is packed away, Italy’s joy of life awaits: from cappuccino and gelato along the lake promenade to trattorias and bars in the medieval setting of Malcesine.
Acommodation
Accommodation is not included in the course price and must be booked directly with the respective provider.
We recommend Hotel Al Molino, located directly on the lake shore and about 2 km north of the centre of Malcesine. This is also where we meet for theory, briefings and video analysis. The landing site is only a few minutes’ walk away – a great advantage for a smooth course.
Those who prefer camping will find a suitable alternative at the adjacent Camping Tonini: from pitches to rooms with breakfast.
There are numerous other accommodation options in the surrounding area. However, when booking, please consider the distance to our meeting point, as short distances make the course much more flexible and enjoyable.
How to get here
The nearest airport is Verona (VRN), about 1 hour away. You can travel by train to Rovereto, north of Lake Garda; from there, you can take a bus or taxi to Malcesine (direct journey approx. 35 minutes). If you are travelling by car or motorhome, parking spaces are available at campsites or hotels.
Catering
Meals are not included in the price. B&Bs or hotels can be booked with breakfast included. Dinner is available either at the hotel or we can organise a table for everyone at one of Malcesine’s many restaurants and spend the evening in good company.
Other sports and leisure options
It is a dream destination for outdoor enthusiasts and connoisseurs – whether water sports such as windsurfing, kitesurfing or sailing, mountain biking on spectacular trails, hiking with panoramic views, trail running, climbing routes and climbs – everyone can find their own personal adventure at Lake Garda.
Those who prefer a quieter pace can enjoy Mediterranean walking trails, small harbours, hidden bathing spots and the charming old towns around the lake.
