Lake Idro:
Peaceful and Italian hospitality
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Proven by 2.467+ Safe Pilots
Located on the border between Lombardy and Trentino, surrounded by cool forests and picturesque villages, lies the scenic Lake Idro.
Italian charm, history and la dolce vita accompagny this place.
A favourable microclimate, suitable infrastructure and less hustle and bustle than at its big brother, Lake Garda, make it an ideal destination for air and water sports enthusiasts.Well shielded and protected, this creates its own microclimate with favourable flying conditions.
Location
The starting point for our training flights over water is the spacious meadow launch site of Monte Alpo, located at an altitude of 1,500 metres, which can be reached in about 25 minutes by car. Following the south-west facing mountain flank, you reach an altitude of around 800 to 1,000 metres above Lake Idro – ideal conditions for extended training sessions.
As the lake is shielded from the Po Valley by hills and mountain ranges, conditions are calm and windless in the morning, with a south wind slowly building up at the launch site. From midday onwards, usually between 11:00 and 12:00, the Ora, the typical strong valley wind of the Italian Pre-Alps, reaches the valley floors. To make the most of this optimal flying window, we take off early in the morning, often between 6:00 and 7:00 a.m. The southern orientation of the launch site favours early updraft conditions.
We land directly on the northern shore of the lake on a spacious, open landing area, which also offers ideal conditions for ground handling in the afternoon. Our training room and the adjacent campsite are within walking distance.
Regardless of cable car opening hours, flexible shuttle services and the excellently developed infrastructure of short distances allow us to make the most of the day.
Why Lake Idro?
In addition to ideal conditions for SIV training, the reliable wind system at Lake Idro also offers excellent opportunities for practising groundhandling. Take-off preparation in windy conditions, reverse launch, cobra launch and and to put down the glider to the side oft he powerzone can all be practised, complementing the aim of our SIV training – to become a safe pilot not only in the air, but also during take-off and landing.
When the Ora wind dies down in the evening, wonderful sunset soaring flights are also sometimes possible.
Acommodation
Accommodation is not included in the price and must be booked directly with the provider.
We recommend the Miralago campsite, located directly at the northern end of Lake Idro. It can be reached from the landing site via a short walk through the adjacent biotope along the lake shore. The site primarily offers pitches and the first new eco-chalets. Due to the often high demand, we recommend booking early.
Opposite the campsite is the Miralago restaurant, where our course room for theory, briefings and video analysis is located.
Other accommodation options include the Hotel Castel Lodron, about a 10-minute drive away, or holiday apartments such as the Seven Aldo Flat, also a short distance from our meeting point.
How to get here
The nearest airports are Verona (VRN) or Bergamo (BGY), about 1.5 hours away. You can travel by train to Rovereto, north of Lake Garda; from there, you can take a long-distance bus or taxi to Lake Idro (direct journey approx. 1 hour 15 minutes). If you are travelling by car or motorhome, parking spaces are available at campsites or hotels.
Catering
Meals are not included in the price. As our training days start very early, we recommend that you do not book a hotel breakfast option, as this is usually not available at the required times. You can either cater for yourself (there are shops nearby) or – in true Italian style – come for a coffee and croissant at the Miralago café-restaurant, which is our morning meeting point anyway. As a café, bistro and pizzeria, Miralago offers suitable dishes at any time of day; we are also happy to reserve a table there for dinner.
There are also other restaurants and typical local agritourism establishments in the surrounding area.
Other sports and leisure options
Lake Idro also offers a wide range of leisure activities besides paragliding: from swimming, SUP and kayaking to hiking and mountain biking in the surrounding mountains, climbing, via ferrata or relaxing hours on the lake shore. Small villages with cafés, restaurants and a rich history also invite you to stroll and enjoy yourself – ideal for active days and relaxing breaks alike.
