Want To Fly Safely But Efficiently In Thermals?
Then take this special training course to learn how to react to turbulence, stabilise your glider in extreme flight situations and climb higher and more efficiently in thermals.
In the SIV part of the course, we place emphasis on preparing you for flying in thermally turbulent air and focus on your reactions to all types of collapses, cravats, autorotations and spins, as well as stabilising pitch and roll movements. You should also master at least two effective rapid descent manoeuvres.
This programme is designed to give you not only practical but also mental confidence, so that you can concentrate fully on turning in the thermals – part two of the course.
Entering thermals, controlling the bank angle, centring the core and re-centring, reading relief and clouds and your decisions in the air are topics we would like to explore in depth. We will provide you with practical support from the ground and from the air.

Training Plan
Manoeuvres and thermal training – if you are well prepared, you will fly further.
Half of this course is devoted to SIV training over water. You will train individually according to your skill level with radio support, a life jacket and a lifeboat. Daily video analysis after the flights reinforces your learning success.
The second half of the course focuses on thermal flying. With radio support at the launch and landing sites, as well as in the air, you can work on your skills – whether it’s about your first thermal experience, efficient turning in the thermals, or looking for new thermals and fly your first kilometres. We make the most of each day with theory sessions and debriefings.

Training schedule
Sunday, day 1: Course starts at 8 a.m. in our common tent at the Sandaya La Nublière campsite, training preparation day.
Welcome and introductions, distribution of rental equipment (radio, life jacket, etc.), theory sessions (for thermal flying or safety training preparation – decision depending on flying weather conditions), introduction to the flying site, individual check of harness adjustment and rescue parachute release (compatibility check), first introductory flight.
Monday to Thursday, days 2 to 5: Training days
Depending on weather conditions, we divide the days between training flights over water and thermal flying days. After flying, we conduct video analysis, theory sessions or debriefings.
Friday, day 6: Final day
Training flights over water or thermal flying, followed by a final briefing and billing. Depending on the flight option, the course ends in the afternoon or early evening.
Flexibility:
Of course, the course schedule will be adapted to the weather conditions of the week as much as possible, which may lead to changes.
If the wind is too strong for flying, we will be happy to train with a ground handling session on the spacious landing site in Doussard. This will not only improve your glider handling skills, but also your reactions, and it’s great fun in a group! We will tailor the course to your previous experience, showing you how to launch reverse, rise the glider from coliflower position or from one side, different techniques to put down the glider and how to handle the glider in strong winds in general.
In weather conditions where the backpack remains closed, an exciting lecture by our team or other theoretical topics will certainly enhance the day. There is always something new to learn!
Communication:
The majority of our team and flight instructors are multilingual, and we are pleased to offer our training courses in various languages (German, English and Spanish). In this case, the group will be divided for technical briefings and explanations; otherwise, the course week will benefit from a multicultural atmosphere. Please refer to the dates for details.
We use a WhatsApp group to communicate times and meeting points during the training week and you will receive an invitation to join this group.
